Budget Still Proposes Cuts to Competitive Cal Grants
Modified By Laura Szabo-Kubitz on 5/15/2008 2:04:50 PM)

Governor Schwarzenegger’s revised 2008-09 state budget proposal, announced yesterday May 14, would unfortunately still eliminate all new Competitive Cal Grants. These grants provide needed funds that help high-achieving, low-income students cover a range of college costs.

Cutting this program would hit community college students hardest, eliminating 45 percent of all new Cal Grants for community college students. Community college students make up 73 percent of those who will be hurt by this cut.

The media and legislators need to hear how this unfair and unwise cut would affect the lives and academic goals of you and your fellow students.

Please contact your representatives in Sacramento, and urge them to save the Competitive Cal Grant.

Read an excellent Los Angeles Times article with a powerful story from a community college student, and please call us at 510-559-9509 or email me at LSzabo-Kubitz@ticas.org if you have a story you would like to share with the press.

Learn more about the cuts from our issue brief, “Proposed Cal Grant Cuts Would Hit Community College Students Hardest.”

Of all the people to pick on... So the Governor doesn't like poor students who get straight A's??? I sat in on an Assembly Budget Sub Committee hearing and listened to a person from the Department of Finance explain just exactly how they could restructure the funding to save the competetive cal grants. It's on us now to make sure the legislature knows that what we want them to do. Visit your Senators local office and make this an issue!
