This past Friday morning, May 23rd, the Education subcommittee of the California Senate Budget Committee rejected the cut to the competitive Cal Grant program. This cut would disproportionately affect community college students, who receive 73 percent of the grants from this program. (See our analysis of this issue.)
Two of the three subcommittee members, Senators Ducheny (D-San Diego) and Romero (D-East Los Angeles), voted to reject the cut, leaving only Senator Margett (R-Glendora) supporting Schwarzenegger’s proposal.
There will still be a fight ahead to save to program, but this is a positive and promising step!
