SSCCC & Up Coming Legislation - DISCUSS!
Modified By Milburn on 4/2/2008 7:58:51 PM)

Make your voice count!  Your Senators on the SSCCC council would like your input for the issues facing California Community Colleges, their students, and the State of California.

These are not someone else’s problems, but issues that will effect you directly – your education, the fees you pay, even whether or not you will be able or accepted to attend college.

Attached below are some links that I have found useful for bill summaries and exact wording and I welcome other links and suggestions (you may have to cut and paste them into your browser vice clicking on them below):

The SSCCC is currently reviewing the following:

AB 2261 (Ruskin), Open Education Resource Centers

AB
2876 (Lieber), Postsecondary Education:  Student Loan Integrity Act

SB 1585 (Padilla), California Community Colleges:  Transfer Students

Please take the time to review the summaries and the bill wording and make comments here about these and any other pending legislation.  Stay tuned for the council's position on these bills and for further updates!  Senator Milburn

Re: SSCCC & Up Coming Legislation - DISCUS!

Awesome I can't wait to hear about the new legislation, what I love is that someone else can keep me up to date on the legislation that will affect me. I dont have to worry about constantly checking the ca leg website, i can do my other work. How does the Governmental Relations Committee decide what bills to talk about? I know the Chancellors Office website has their Governmental Relations Divsion Leg tracking matrix online. Can we expect a leg tracking matrix from the Student Senate?

Great questions!  The Governmental Relations Committee attempts to review any and all legislation that will effect California Community College Students.  We also take recommendations/suggestions from our fellow Council members and our constituents as well.  The Committee will definitely be working on some type of  tracking matrix or spreadsheet for the future but I am afraid that I cannot give a good estimate as to when that will be on-line at this time.  Look for it in the near future!

UPDATE:  The Student Senate for the California Community Colleges has taken an official position of support for the following legislation:

AB 2261 (Ruskin), Open Education Resource Centers

AB
2876 (Lieber), Postsecondary Education:  Student Loan Integrity Act

In addition, the SSCCC has taken an official position against the following legislation:

SB 1585 (Padilla), California Community Colleges:  Transfer Students

Please keep in mind that our official position is subject to change if there are any changes to the bills in the future.  Any further amendments will require a review of the new bill and also a new vote as to our stance on the issues at hand.

Stay tuned for more updates!

Let me know what you think!
