SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC), in collaboration with various faculty unions, successfully hosted its annual Advocacy Day and March in March event, bringing together over 600 students, faculty, and community members in Sacramento. The event provided a platform for students to engage directly with legislators on critical issues impacting them within California's community college system.
This highly anticipated event allowed students to meet with their elected representatives, advocating for policies and reforms that directly impact their education. It also allowed students and faculty to march to the state capitol, amplifying their collective voices to ensure those in power heard their concerns.
A key highlight of the day was the speeches delivered by legislators, including Assemblymember Mike Fong, Chair of the Higher Education Committee, and Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi, Chair of the Education Committee and a member of both the Higher Education Committee and Assembly Subcommittee 3, which oversees the higher education budget. They shared valuable insights on the importance of advocacy and the impact of student activism.
"It takes all of us to make a difference—by showing up, sharing our stories, and amplifying the voices of those we love. We must also remind those in positions of power that we are more than just numbers on a spreadsheet; we are the future of this state. Today, we showed up!" said Ivan Hernandez, President of SSCCC.
The event emphasized the need for continued dialogue between students and lawmakers, underscoring the importance of student voices in shaping the future of higher education.
