WHEREAS, Article 3 [1] , Article 3.5 [2], and Article 4 [3] of Chapter 4.5 under Title 3 of the Education Code under California Law, states that public higher education in California strives to provide educationally equitable environments listed in Section 66270, a reasonable opportunity to fully develop his or her potential;
WHEREAS, members of the LGBTQ community [4] are three (3) times more likely to experience a mental health condition compared to the heterosexual population and 1 out of every 5 women [5] in the United States are diagnosed with some form of mental health condition;
WHEREAS, students have requested for such Women and Gender Equity Resources centers that would promote both academic success and mental wellness which are not mandated by California law; and
WHEREAS, out of the 114 community colleges, only seven California Community Colleges have a professionally staffed LGBTQ+ resource center [6], while all California State Universities [7] and Universities of California [6] have such centers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Student Senate for California Community Colleges encourage each ASO and their respective college administrations to implement a Women and Gender Equity Resource Center, which addresses the mental health and career needs of CCC students while ensuring their academic success; and
RESOLVED, that the SSCCC urge the California Legislature, the Board of Governors for California Community Colleges, and the governing bodies of community college districts to pass legislation supporting the creation of Women and Gender Equity Centers.
