WHEREAS: The Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC) is recognized by the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges as “the representative community college-associated student government organization before the Board of Governors and Chancellor’s Office in accordance with Title 5, Section 50002”;
WHEREAS: California Education Code, Section 48800 authorizes the opportunity for California high school students “to attend a community college as a special part-time student and to enroll in one or more courses offered at the community college level”;
WHEREAS: The California Community Colleges Board of Governors have approved unanimously in 2012 and established a system-wide enrollment priorities designed to ensure new students who have completed college orientation, assessment, and developed education plans will have priority over students who do not meet these criteria ;
WHEREAS: Students who take college courses while in high school have a higher chance of earning a college degree [4]
RESOLVED: that the SSCCC urges California State Legislature to create and pass legislation to broaden dual enrollment opportunities for high school students who wish to enroll in college courses;
RESOLVED: that the SSCCC urges California State Legislature to rewrite/ amend Assembly Bill No. 288 which details the dual enrollment opportunities in order to eliminate the restrictions many community colleges place on high school students such as unit limitations, grade requirements, and mandatory late registration; and
RESOLVED: that the SSCCC advocates for California Community Colleges to support dual enrolled students, increase dual enrollment populations, and become transparent with local high school districts.
