WHEREAS, in the California Community College system the cost of fulltime tuition is cheaper than the average cost of textbooks for the year;

WHEREAS, on average a new textbook for one class costs more than the amount of the units accumulated for the cost of the actual class itself;

WHEREAS, the increasing cost of textbooks promotes increased equity and achievement gaps for low income students, who are predominantly students of color; and

WHEREAS, The use of online educational resources can allow the instructor to personalize the educational experience and reduce or eliminate textbook cost students accrue;

RESOLVED, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges advocate for a greater push for more California Community College courses utilizing zero cost textbooks;

RESOLVED, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges urges the California Community College Chancellor’s Office to implement an initiative program that would encourage all California Community Colleges to offer at least 50 percent of courses at zero cost to students;

RESOLVED, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges identifies an individual in the legislature that would be willing to carry this as a bill.
