Fall 2008
Committee:
President
Whereas, The Student Senate for California Community Colleges is the official recognized student association that represents California’s 2.6 million community college students and it is in the best interests of California’s Community College students for the Student Senate to have the necessary resources at its disposal to participate effectively statewide;
Whereas, The Student Senate for California Community Colleges’ current model of funding through the Chancellor’s Office is put at risk by California’s budget issues that threatens to suspend intrastate travel, meeting, and advocacy expenses, as well as reduce the Student Senate’s ability to advocate independently for the best interests of students;
Whereas, Every California community college which has established a representation fee has dedicated funds specifically for the purpose of supporting “…students or representatives who may be stating their positions and viewpoints before city, county, districts governments, and before offices and agencies of the state and federal government” (Education Code §76060.5); and
Whereas, A donation given to the Student Senate for California Community Colleges from any associated students organization is given voluntarily and with the expectation that the funds will be used only for the Student Senate to represent and advocate on behalf of all California community college students;
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges promote and publicize an annual request for monetary donations from the 110 California community college associated students organizations;
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges gratefully accept any monetary donation so that the Student Senate’s ability to represent and advocate on behalf of all California community college students will be strengthened;
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges develop policies and procedures, in consultation with all appropriate stakeholders, that will govern the use of donated funds from California community college associated students organizations; and
Resolved, That the Student Senate for California Community Colleges report back to the delegates at all General Assemblies and post in the Student Senate website following the passage of this resolution with the information regarding how said funds have been used so as to ensure the greatest possible transparency, accountability, and responsibility.
